THE ADVENTURE HUB: COMMAND THE ADIRONDACKS
The John Brannon House isn't just a place to stay; it is the strategic center of the North Country. While most visitors spend their trip in the car, our location allows you to pivot from world-class whitewater to fire tower summits in the time it takes to finish a cup of coffee. This is the heart of the wildest, least-crowded corridor in the park.
The 20-Minute Radius: High-Octane Access
Within twenty minutes of the front door, you have access to the "Big Three" of Adirondack adventure.
Whitewater: The Hudson Gorge (15 mins): The premiere rafting run in New York. A 17-mile wilderness trip through Class III-V rapids. We recommend Square Eddy Expeditions for a boutique, expert-led experience.
Vertical: Gore Mountain (20 mins): In the summer, the mountain transforms into a downhill mountain biking hub with 1,700 feet of lift-served vertical. In the winter, it is the largest ski area in New York.
Pristine Water: Thirteenth Lake (20 mins): A rare "silent" lake where motorboats are prohibited. It’s the crown jewel for quiet paddling and brook trout fishing in the Siamese Ponds Wilderness.
The Summit Missions
From family-friendly fire towers to the tallest peak in the central Adirondacks, the best views in the park are essentially in your backyard.
Moxham Mountain (10 mins): The closest summit. A moderate 5.5-mile hike where the views start appearing just 0.6 miles in—perfect for keeping morale high with younger hikers.
Vanderwhacker Mountain (25 mins): A 5.3-mile trip to a 1918 fire tower. The summit offers what many consider the single best panorama of the High Peaks.
Snowy Mountain (45 mins): The "Bucket List" hike. A demanding 7.8-mile trek to the tallest peak in the central Adirondacks, offering views of 32 different High Peaks on a clear day.
Gorges, Garnets & Geology
Barton Garnet Mine (20 mins): Tour one of the largest garnet mines in the world and unearth your own gemstones to take home.
Natural Stone Bridge and Caves (35 mins): Explore the largest marble cave entrance in the Eastern U.S., featuring self-guided cave trails and a massive "DinoDig" for the kids.
OK Slip Falls (40 mins): A 6.4-mile round trip to see one of the tallest waterfalls in the Adirondacks, plunging 250 feet into a spectacular gorge.
The 90-Minute Perimeter
Because you are centrally located, the marquee attractions of the Northern Park are an easy day trip away.
The Olympic Village (Lake Placid) (85 mins): Ride the Olympic bobsled or visit the ski jumping complex.
Ausable Chasm (90 mins): Tackle the Via Ferrata, a guided "Adventure Trail" featuring cable bridges and edge walks along sandstone gorge walls.
